So in weight training there are many theories: some say lift every day splitting upper and lower body parts. Others say work upper and lower in one session but give at least 48 hours for muscle recovery. You have torn down fibers and they need time to rebuild.
With the erg is there a general consensus if one should row every day or is it preferable to row every other day? My rowing will be mainly for weight loss and to improve cardiovascular status. lift and row on same day?
Thanks
How often should I row?
Re: How often should I row?
Most training plans account for the fact that torn down fibres need some rest time by alternating hard workouts with long (slow) steady rows that improve the aerobic/cardiovascular system.
For example Day 1 hard interval training (with a number of fast sprints or fast middle distance pieces), day 2 recovery row at 60-70% of your MHRR, day 3 hard distance row 10k, day 4 revovery row and so forth.
When your main goal is weight loss you can toss most of the interval work and sprints and you can go on the long steady rows @ 60-80% MHHR every day without having to bother too much with resting needs. One or two rest days or doing something else are good so as not to get too bored on doing the same every day. Almost any training plan recommends at least one day off.
Regarding weights I usually do those after interval training or hard distance rows because both of these exercises need a recovery day (either by a slow recovery row or a day off).
Cheers and good luck with your training.

Re: How often should I row?
Endurance is about making lots of steady meters at relative easy pace. Breathing should stay calm, this will not damage the muscle. It can be done daily. Toprowers often train 2/3 times per day.drjay9051 wrote:So in weight training there are many theories: some say lift every day splitting upper and lower body parts. Hard rowing is different, this can be compared with doing weights.
You can combine weights and endurance, but if possible keep it seperated.
Re: How often should I row?
I read somewhere recently - can't remember where, maybe even on here - that you need a good break between hard intervals and weight training, but not so between longer steady rows and weight training. So, if you're going to do them on the same day you should do your intervals in the morning and then weights in the evening, before resting next day I suppose. Avoid the intervals straight into weights mega session in one go. It's fair enough to do a longer row and then weights in one go though.
