College Transfer - Rowing

Post by Fsears1 » September 13th, 2016, 7:32 pm

Hello all,

I am looking for advice regarding the possibility of a transfer to a more competitive rowing school. Currently I attend a public university in NY with a club team that is under developed and under funded. I am a junior but I am only in my 3rd semester of rowing as I did not join the sport until my sophomore year of college. During my novice year on the crew team my erg scores have steadily improved as I learned more about the sport and increased my training load. In the fall of 2015, for my first 2k test ever I pulled somewhere around 6:55 or just under 7 minutes. Later in the fall semester I improved that to a 6:40. Towards the middle of the spring semester I tested again further improving to a 6:30 and change. Two months after the 6:30 I did my last 2k test of the semester and got down to a 6:17.5. For reference, I am 20 yrs old, 6'2(188cm) and weight just over 190lbs(86kg). I am now continuing to increase my training load for head season and expect to keep making steady improvements.

The university I attend is regarded as the best in the NYS public system however, my grades are fairly mediocre. My overall GPA is 3.2 as a result of a low GPA during my freshman year. I changed my major in the spring of last year to something that suits me much better and was able to pull out a 3.6 for spring semester. For this reason I believe that I can continue to raise my grades this semester and the next.

It is my understanding that rowers have 8 semesters of eligibility for collegiate competition. The advice I'm looking for is whether or not it would be worthwhile to attempt a transfer to another university with a more developed and competitive rowing program. If so, would a transfer to an Ivy be out of the question given my current condition physically and academically? I would like to row at a development camp this summer and possibly compete at the next level after graduating from college. I have found very little information regarding collegiate recruiting or rowers transferring between universities.

Any input or information helps!
Thanks
