Power-Endurance Survey

Post by nickels » October 22nd, 2016, 8:26 pm

Hi guys,

Earlier in the year I posted a survey on the reddit rowing sub, asking people to report on their erg scores at different distances. (Low-pull, 500, 2k, etc).

I was thrilled to get roughly 240 responses but I'd like to have even more data/larger sample size.

Here's a link to it:

If you guys could take a minute to fill it out I'd really appreciate it. The goal was to track the relationship between power and endurance as the title states.

Thanks in advance!

Roughly how long will the survey be open for. I will happily fill in my data but it isn't up to date enough at the moment. Come mid December I should have a more accurate data set.
Piers 53m was 73Kg 175cm to 2019 now 78kg
500m 1:34 (HW 2020) 2k 7:09.5 (2017 LWT) 10k 39:58.9 (2016 LWT) HM 1:28:26.9 (2017 LWT)

Could you explain what you are going to do with the data?

The survey will always be open.

So far I've used the data to get an idea of how fast rowers should be at different speeds. I think the "2k+x" method is inaccurate.

I hope that people will use this to determine if they should be improving power or endurance. You can also set goals based on splits. For example, if you want a 6:30 2k but you can compare your power, as well as how well you sustain power to other people who pull around a 630.

If I am not mistaken, don't the Nonathon Guys get a dump of the data every year from C2. That would provide you with tens of thousands of entries across all distances, genders and age groups

I was thinking of scraping numbers from the c2 ranking site but wasn't sure how to go about it.

Wow, I just googled that site you mentioned and its perfect. Thanks so much!

I had considered suggesting nonathlon, but held off since none of the data is verified. The same applies to the C2 ranking site, although most of those entries do have a verification of sorts. Verification on the website site merely confirms the distance and time of a particular ranked piece. It does not confirm the age, gender, weight status, or even the identity of the person that does the ranking. Log card verifications do not even confirm the date or time that the piece was done since those depend on the monitor setting, not on the actual date and time.

If you used just those with at least one race result (probably 2k but other distances are raced) you would know age and weight. You could copy and paste from the list into Excel. Then select another distance and copy and paste sort on name and discard anyone who only has one entry. Repeat for other distances.
