I seem to be experiencing sharp pains in the joint that attaches my leg to my torso, preventing me from rowing above 80% work. Anyone have any ideas and solutions?
The only thing I can think of is that it may be related to loose straps and I'm hooking my toes to help pull me forward.

I have before had some pain in the tendon or ligament that connects the thigh to the pelvis. I think it is called the abductor or something. I would agree that it could be caused by trying to pull yourself forward on the recovery by pulling on the straps. I started rowing strapless for all but Interval work and TT's a while back and have not experienced the problem since.
Try rowing strapless on your lower rate work. Some people can row strapless at rates like 30 but I can not. Rowing strapless will help you with proper recovery instead of relying on your legs to pull you back up on the slide it should be hands away fast, then body tilting forward at the hips then legs. If you do this you will not need to pull with the legs.

Thanks so much Rich. I've always found strapless rowing to be rather strange but have also heard that if you push through it that it becomes more natural.
Since I use rowing primarily as cross training perhaps I'll focus on some longer distance pieces without straps before I go back to higher intensity interval work.
