So, this is my day 4 of the Pete Plan and it called for "Hard distance (~5k+)". Given that it's challenge time, a HM clearly qualifies given the "+" in "~5k+", and because I've never done more than a 15K UT2 piece it would certainly be hard for me, I (foolishly) thought I'd give it a go.

I managed to finish, but just barely - at 1:29:33.1. Started off way too fast, but it didn't sink in until the halfway point. So, I flew for 45 minutes, and died slowly and painfully over the last 45 minutes. Almost gave up with about 20 minutes to go, but managed to talk myself into continuing.

Details here: https://log.concept2.com/profile/203297/log/38119964.

Still, pretty happy with it all. I'll know my pacing better for the next one, and have also learned that I'm nowhere near being able to pull off a FM. Perhaps next year for that. As a bonus, I got to brag to my wife that I'm in the top 5 globally in my age and weight class. I didn't tell her that I'm also in the bottom 5 :D .
M60, 180cm/95kg (5'11"/210lb); 500m = 1:35.9; 2k = 7:17.8; 5k = 19:27.3; 10k = 40:45.8; HM = 1:29:33.1

Hey! that's great, going sub 1h30 too, congrats!! I remember dying badly on my first one and watching 1hr30 slip by in last 10 minutes and just couldn't pull it back missing out by 30s! Remember to print out both certificates, for HM and global challenge! :D
FM is a big step up but also a great challenge. Well done again

Lindsay, that link is dead. I couldn't find what you intended, otherwise I would have posted it myself.

Full Marathon

Time.................2:58:05.4
SPM..................31
DF....................105
Pace.................2:06.6

Full Marathon this morning for the Lwt facebook group and C2 challenges.

Delighted to have set a new (all time) PB as a 61 year old Lwt (73.0k/161 lbs yesterday) beating my old one (from 2011 when I was just a youngster of 53 and Hwt). :D

Felt good all the way so maybe a faster one before the end of the season....but other things to concentrate on first!

DF was 105...compared to my usual 110.
67 year old, 72 kilo (159lbs), 5'8''/174cm (always the shortest on the podium!) male. Based just south of London.
Best rows as an over 60. One Hour.....16011 metres. 30 mins.....8215 metres. 100k 7hrs 14 mins.

That stroke rate for 3 hours  that's 10more a minute than I pulled!

Be interested to know how you fuelled it, fluid intake etc.

Thanks Dino, it’s a normal stroke rate for me as apart from being very old and very light I’m also not very tall at only 5’8’’/174cm. My cardio is good as my background is running and I put in over 300k per month on the erg but my stroke power ain’t great so have to make up for it by going up and down like a fiddlers elbow!

I didn’t take on any fluid at all (I was well hydrated before the start and it was cool in my gym with a strong fan on me) l and just ate 2 bananas at halfway…..which was plenty….although I doubt I needed them.

I’m well ‘’fat adapted’’ (so burn it as fuel very efficiently thus needing less Glycogen) as I’ve been doing polarised training using the the ‘’Maffetone method’’….have a look and see what you think;

Thanks Rod for the info... Very interesting link, had a quick look and I shall have a proper read.
I have a zero cardio background and hate running!!
and find any dehydration really affects me. I think I averaged just over 280k per month on the C2 in the 3 months in build up to FM.
All the info suggests that once get to 2% loss in weight then performance affected. I couldn't imagine doing the FM without a drink. I am annoyed I didn't weigh myself before and after, I know my clothes weighed a ton and my garage floor was doing a fine impression of a lake by the end!

Kick off the season with a PB FM
Trying not to over think this, I know I can do it as I have done them before, and it doesnt matter if I do it or not as it is only for my benefit, I tried to follow my plan (hope piccy attached but not done that before so may not work) was the most comfortable FM I have done, I was pretty much 1-2 mins ahead all the way through, trying to limit SR . would result in pace going away and vice versa, a little stint at R34 also a little stint 2.13 pace, so rate up chimp row faster, 1400 to go, chimp says slow down, no way, rage up chimp row faster, sorry didnt realise monitor was set to 2000 splits

So its nearly the end of the Global Marathon and Century Challenge window....

Wasn't sure I'd have time tomorrow, so it was HM time this evening. I would have been quite happy trying to knock a bit off my PB, but then a certain young Austrian went and smashed my HM PB on his first HM attempt a couple of days ago!! the cheek of it!!!! (only kidding Martin!)

Decided that it would have to be a 'three C's' workout.... Courage, Commitment, Craziness
Courage to set a pace way faster than before.... commitment to keep that pace, and craziness to attempt in the first place!
So the target was set... 1:25:40.... or 1m22 off my current PB...

Decided I would have to forgo any thoughts of negative split / ramp up / burn up at the end and go for a sustained even pace to have any chance, and then see if anything left at all at the end. Planned for 2:02 (or just under) rate 20 to 10k mark (1hr26 projected'ish), then increase the stroke rate a little. 5 or 4k to go, see if I could hold 2:00 pace.

It turned out better than expected :) and managed to set a bit of a target as well rather than just scrape inside B)

Really good FM, well done. If it was comfortable then you are making good progress and your base fitness must have improved

It's great seeing a huge leap in PB, especially when it's down to someone upping the ante.

Over to you Martin!! I'm looking forward to seeing how this pans out as it's now a challenge between the two of you!

It's a pleasure to help you crushing PBs :D 1m22 off is great!
And really well paced, the last 1k wasn't funny I guess

 I haven't planned to do a HM TT soon, but now it looks like I have to :D
The good thing is, I wasn't as destroyed as I expected after HM. The bad thing: When striving for sub 1h25, I'm sure this will change!
