Iain, I would assume that 75% of 2k pace is an equivalent, if the VO2 max approximation on this website is equalizing the effort of a 2k and a VO2 max test. So, 1.25x2k pace in seconds, or 10% slower than the level 3 workouts of the Wolverine Plan. It'd be comparable to the pace at 16SPM of a level 4 workout (25% slower than 2k split in seconds).

Great article Mike, gonna find the rest of it in a second.

I think that gives 80% of pace (1/1.25), or ~51% of 2k power. 75% of pace is 1.33 x 2k pace, a very slow pace that would mean that very little erg training would be relevant to the article. IOf it was 75% of 2k power, then for me this is 10k PB pace and means anyone not doing Level 2 intensity or higher is in this category.

56, lightweight in pace and by gravity. Currently training 3-4 times a week after a break to slowly regain the pitiful fitness I achieved a few years ago. Free Spirit, come join us http://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/

Ahh right, my mistake with the math. But it'd be easier to think about it in wattage, so 75% of a 2:00/500m pace (200W), would be 150W, and if you're breaking 7' on a 2k, you're pulling over 300W for that 2k so 75% of that is 225W, or something like 1:54/500m. The level 2 pace is 2k time times 1.08, so your target pace is 1:53.4. So it would be level 2 intensity over the course of an hour, assuming you look at wattage for the comparison.

Pretty confident in the logic there...

pjc asked:
Your cardiologist said what exactly? That intense, Tabata type workouts are effective? Or that regular aerobic exercise takes years off your life?

The cardiologist read the articles and simply said that is how he would advocate training. He didn't say that regular aerobic exercise would take years off of one's life but he did not advocate extreme versions of aerobic exercise (marathon running, etc) as they are typically not sustainable over the long haul for the average human.

I appreciate all the replies; great conversation. I am learning a lot.
