I don’t get where there is any advantage in this.

Tony, I think that the idea is that the contraption is used not merely in training, but also in races. Otherwise I would agree with your points completely.
While I think the powercrank on the bike was a great idea (even if the 40% claims seem a bit Trumpian) I'm not keen on this because it would change the sport. Not cheating as the use of an energy storage system isn't yet banned afaik, but an intrusion of technology into an athletic endeavour.
Dr Day described it as like the Fosbury flop. I think it would be a bit more like all the bench suits and other paraphernalia that has resulted in all the different records in powerlifting that depend on what equipment you've got and not just raw strength.

When Greg LeMond first saw the PowerCranks he said to me "I worked for years to learn how to pedal this way now people can learn it in months."

Can power cranks be fitted to concept2 bikes?
No, because C2 uses an inferior type of connection for the cranks. I wanted to use shorter cranks and was also looking at the power cranks, but due to C2's inferior wacko design my only alternative was to purchase an extra set of the C2 cranks, a pair of power taps, and have a local machine shop drill the C2 cranks at 150mm.
I hope that eventually C2 will implement a standard fitting, and also use a standard connection method which would allow the use of other sizes of cranks, stop the cranks from easily coming loose, eliminate the knocking and various other issues which result from the current inferior and restrictive type of connection.

Ouch.
Still got my steel framed bike from 1982. Had to upgrade those separate cones and ball bearings to a "Modern" bottom end sealed set for my existing cranks that have the square taper on them donkeys' years ago but it still works well.
I think they hang my Healing Shogun's up on the wall in Cafe's frequented by cyclists for a bit of a laugh these days while they drink their flat whites.

1. Imagine rocking up at a race and constructing a frame and pulley system to the C2

2. This shows that a modified C2 can ‘go faster’ than an unmodified one.

While I envisioned this change to be mostly for those who race on the water where the "serious" competitors really are I have 3D printed some adapters that can slip onto the C2 that could be carried to competitions in a suitcase and modify a C2 without tools (and without any need for walls or ceilings) in less than 5 minutes should someone want to do that and C2 would allow that (it isn't clear they would but if it is legal on the water I am not sure why they would say no or, at least, start a new competition group). This came up because I wanted to move my C2 where a wall and ceiling was not an option. So, what you see in the video is not what I use anymore.

I still have my Cro-moly bike I got in 1977. The frame is cracked but I kept it for nostalgia/historical purposes as I rode it in the first Ironman. High tech at the time.
