I did this one on my own ERG which is where I typically do most my longer rows. I have calluses built up from rowing so was surprised to get the blisters from the HM - might try some tape, I had a model-C for a few months before I got this ERG a little over a year ago and it had the foam covered handle which seemed to stop the blisters (then again never went that far on that one). Anyway, I am pleased with the effort but not planning on a HM or FM (which I haven't done yet) for a while. Doing this again, I am even more impressed with your HM and longer rows.Dangerscouse wrote: ↑June 24th, 2019, 4:08 pmWith some more specific training you can go sub 80 mins, but this is a strong effort regardless. I usually have a wobble at about that time too, but I seem to recover quicker now that I'm used to doing 10 miles.KeithT wrote: ↑June 24th, 2019, 8:36 amI got a PB on my HM as part of the Solstice Challenge on Friday - took 26 seconds off with a 1:20:22 (1:54.2)
Nothing terribly exciting but I was happy to get a PB on a longer row as I haven't had one for a while. As usual I went a little too fast to start but I felt good from 21,097 to 10,000 to go and was averaging a 1:53.3 pace and had the idea I was going to go below 1:20:00. I really hit the wall at about 8k to go and slowed down some (1:56/1:57), didn't panic as I was still well ahead of PB pace but now knew that sub 1:20:00 might not be in the cards. Suffered thru to 2k to go and then knew I was going to PB and by a decent amount and just hung on until the end with going a little faster at very end. Got some real nasty blisters on hands and "backside" this time which I didn't get on a recent 60 min row but all part of it. This was only my second ever HM and I don't plan to do many of them![]()
I find liquid chalk helps with sweaty hands and if it's your own erg, buy some cycle tape to wrap around the handles. It doesn't seem like much, but there is surprisingly quite a difference in your head between a 60 mins and a HM.

Long distance stuff is very much a cool conditions thing, really don,t get to do this in summer. Makes a world of difference to do this say around 5C orso.
Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks! Yeah, I love to hit certain time barriers for the different distances and loved the idea of a sub 1:20:00 but just didn't quite have that. Have some other big goals for short and mid distances so will start messing with those more.Gammmmo wrote: ↑June 25th, 2019, 10:32 amYeah pity you lost sub 1:20 as that would've looked waaaaay better but a PB is a PB as they say, and well done for toughing it out. Don't think I have ever rowed in cool conditions - always been inside in heated gym or house when its cooler out and a few times outside were when it was really hot out. Always wondered what impact it could have on a longer row.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thats indeed a bit different. I row outside mostly, in winter in the garden house, which I keep just above freezing.
Erging, sitting pretty still, moving slow, very much builds heat, a fan or wind helps, but nice cool air much more. You simply need to sweat a lot less.
At the moment, I have very hot conditions, relative rare here. Makes training more or less undoable. After 10 min I am soaked and overheated. Talking 30C and a bit more.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Thanks mate. Horses for courses. Your shorter distances are way beyond me. As Henry says the heat won't have helped, and I'm used to an air con gym or a big fan blowing to cool me down if I do it at home. I think that all of my PBs have been set outside of summer months.

Well done, and yes, a faster 5k will definitely help increase your 2k, but to really maximise your 2k rating closer to or into the 30s will be most beneficial.thewagster wrote: ↑June 25th, 2019, 8:44 pmNew 5km pb by 6 seconds. In reality, it doesn't really matter though as long as you get a faster 2k that you're happy with

“We” had 36 yesterday. This morning a lot cooler, along the coast around 20, inlands to the sound still 30, in the weekend warmer again.
Ofcourse nothing like you guys can have, its still pretty warm. Av. For us is around 16 for June. This month will set a new all time high.

@ Henry & Lindsay, i was wanting to make amends for not achieving a HM p.b. the other day. As you've stated long hard distances don't mix with heat. Thankyou both.
