Thought I would amuse myself by doing the 1K challenge today, even though I am not remotely prepared to do so, given my history over the last two years.
Turned 74 today and did 3:25.2 @1:42.6. Tired, went out too fast, and it got ugly. Maybe 74 yr olds should not be doing this speed stuff. I can't even get below 1:38 for 500m. That pretty much says it all.

All I really wanted to do is get within hailing distance of Lindsay who did 3:21.2, good enough for 5th in 60+ for now. Actually I would be 8th in 60+ at this point. I used to never let him get me, but it's a regular occurrence now. If I can recover, may try again on Sun. But those hard meters take a lot out of a person.
That is a phenomenal result for a 74 year old, and happy birthday Jim

Happy birthday Jim,

This is properly good for any age. Just checked the rankings. 54%ile in the 19-29 M HWT age bracket.

Not too shabby.

Phew - found this tough.
I done a 6x1 on/30sec off not long ago and yep it can get tough quickly. Beforehand, you think bah 1 minute on, intervals, whats the worst that can happen... LOTS

Good pace on those Max.
Thanks Anth,

Certainly I was expecting it to be a lot easier than it was. No idea how I am going to string 3.5 of those together with no rest if I'm going to meet my goal for 1k this year.

Yes happy birthday Jim - your return to the erg in the past year or so is nothing short of amazing after what you had to deal with. I am genuinely flattered that you can use some of my pieces as a benchmark but I am afraid it may sharpen my times up a bit just make sure.

Thanks to all for the kind remarks. Just trying to get back to respectability for me. Can't quite get to where I want and it's doubtful that I will. Nonetheless will take what I can and attempt to be satisfied.

Now, I'm at the 96 percentile mark for 60-79 for the 1K challenge. What the heck, should be happy with that. And 1K is hardly my cup of tea. We need a 5K challenge. Then I have a fighting chance, though I have a ways to go this yr for that distance.

Not what I wanted but it was all I had. I have had a really bad week at work and this was done at lunchtime as I tried to muster enough enthusiasm. I almost HDed with 200m to go but I struggled on feeling sorry for myself and regretting my life choices.

The barbell plates weren't on the erg either so I was slipping backwards and forwards which was annoying.

I'm just not sharpened enough for short distances atm and my 10 miles sessions feel notably more comfy. I think I need a lot more short sharp distances.

Keith, this is a better example of clinging on!!

Got up this morning and the sun was shining nice n bright... went out on the foldup city bike for 30mins to get some fresh air! Got home and done 10mins heavy punch bag work to warm up for some HIT on the erg. This was certainly a shock to my system which is a good thing, and tbh was needed :)

Not quite as bad as my fly and die but same basic scenario, which just equals pain and a worse time. At least you didn't HD and hung on when in the dark place.

You both have inspired me (along with many more on here). I'm still around, just plodding meters. Getting over the flu, but my last month (even only up till the 17th in Feb) was 170K meters and Jan was 230K meters. If you can come back after back surgery, Jim, the way you have, I can mount a relative comeback to mediocre (all I have ever been!). I plan on averaging 230K plus for 2020 and see how far that takes me. I was just starting to feel my old self a bit when I had to take off a week for my stepson's wedding, then got the flu traveling.

Happy B-Day!

Don't get hurt with all the meters. I've never come close to 230K a month. I struggle getting 20K a week. And I worry about over doing it. There are several I've enjoyed chasing through the years: lindsay, Richard S., Steve R., Frans van Mierlo, even TJO, to name some.

Been building back up through the beginner Pete Plan after a couple of years of slacking. Did my first 10k in a long time, so quite pleased with a 41:39.3 at 22.

Long way off getting back under 1:55 pace!
