World Class Start

Post by john589 » April 29th, 2007, 4:47 pm

I've been reading about WCS and wanted some advice on whether I'd fit the profile they're looking for? Do they look for people with a lot of experience of rowing or just for people who they think have potential?

I started rowing as a hobby about a year ago, very unfit. Around October I pulled my first 2k at 7:52. I weighed 102kg at the time. :( 6 months later, I've just gone sub-7, pulling 6:57 and I'm now 92kg (still a few kg to go :)).

I've been sweep rowing for around 9 months but I can't scull.

I'm 19, 189cm tall and my inside leg's 88cm/35 inches. Arm span is 195cm. Do I fit into the sizes that they're looking for? Is it worth me applying next time they come around or am I too short?

Thank you for any advice you can give me,
John

Emphasis added!

Hi John,

I have no direct knowledge of any of this, but recall an thread from last year on World Class Start on the UKForum. Separately, you'll want to look at what is on the ARA site about the WCS programe.

Notwithstanding some of the discussion on the forum thread of perhaps a new, even-taller height requirement, I'd go w/ what is on the ARA site until the WCS people tell you you aren't tall enough (you appear to be tall enough based on the ARA page...).

Finally, if you're interested, I'd wait for them to tell you that you don't qualify...no reason for you to disqualify yourself simply because you think they "might"! If this is a dream of yours, give yourself a chance at it!

Best wishes!

Alissa
