February SkiErg Challenge

Post by Steve W » February 1st, 2016, 2:32 pm

The SkiErg Challenge started today. Be interested in hearing from others as they are doing the challenge. Would expect that time-wise, I'll be at the bottom of the barrel but still plan on completing the challenge / distances. Good luck to all SkiErgers!

Are you referring to this?

The goal is to achieve best times and not just log the meters, right?

Had to re-read to answer. Instructions indicate logging the distances, not best times. I think the participant has to decide the effort. My hope is to set PB's but doesn't indicate effort in the challenge. Even with PB's, I expect to get kicked to the curb by our heftier forum members!

Gotcha.

I just did a 5km for the first time on the SkiErg. A pedestrian 23'16'' - 2:19.6/500m
It's hard! I'm still figuring out the movement and pacing.
Are the splits, averages, stroke count and drag comparable to the RowErg? I wasn't pushing hard and I hovered around 30r.

It is different. Stroke rates are typically higher and seems like in general, times are about 10% slower. Just like rowing, takes practice, a little instruction and concentration for good form. I'd love to have that 5K time! Lightweights will have a disadvantage regarding power / torque but it's an excellent workout regardless and nice compliment to rowing & other activities.

First week distance challenge met, certainly not a PR but was there in spirit (too tired after work to try). Will go a PR on at least a couple of these...

One more distance, 10k, to meet the challenge. Started today with the intention of PR'ing . Bad news was it didn't happen, good news was set a PR for 30 minutes, just breaking 6k for the distance. Looked like two chicken wings trying to sprint the distance  . Whether I break the old PR is still up for debate but will complete the challenge by week's end.

Keep it coming, Steve.
I've been using the SkiErg mainly for UT2 work.
I've also been watching the XC Skiing and Biathlon on Eurosport to pick something up. Those men and women are machines. Incredible power. Maybe I'll get an air-rifle to spice up the training. :D

Well said. After the Ski-Erg arrived and was assembled, I put some XC skiing and Olympic Biathlon on YouTube in front of the machine. It's a wonder how those folks must settle their breathing for the shooting stages immediately after the exertion of skiing.

10k PR :D ! Thanks for the encouragement & suggestions. Put a DVD of the MR340 Canoe Race in that I'm registered for in July. Provided motivation knowing I'm working and training hard toward a goal (a long one!). Set a slightly slower pace to begin this time around, still was able to increase bettered my 30 minute PR set earlier this week by 8 meters, then worked at maximum to maintain the pace. Based on flashdrive record, was about 3 seconds faster in the second 5k, finishing in 49:56.5. Can't imagine having gone any faster, which is I guess how one should feel if done right. That one is going to stand & will work on other distances if the PR urge hits. Good way to finish the skierg challenge! Hope others are finding luck in finishing the challenge as well.
