Remove round fan plate in front of FlyWheel, makes workout intense.

Has anyone removed the round fan plate in front of the flywheel? I did it last week, now the workout is more challenging. I'm on SkiErg for 1 hour a day, and the Rower 1 hour a day. Waiting for my BikeErg to arrive so I can use that too. I start with the hardest first, SkiErg.

Most do, but that gives a very high drag, makes the stroke super slow. For fast sprinting usefull, but for longer sessions absolutely not.

It simply increases the drag range from 60-160 ish to about 90-240 with the plate off. Doesn't necessarily make it any more intense. You can still do intense sessions at low drag and easier sessions at higher drag if you want to.

If you want really high drag (350-400) on the SkiErg then also remove the metal mesh as well as the plate. I've seen 404 drag on mine a couple of times and always upwards of 350 on a 10 damper.

What a drag...you must have arms like tree trunks. Yep SkiErg a tough mistress.
As a matter of interest at that 'damper setting' what kind metres / watts / stroke rate do you get at the end of the hour? you must be whacked.

You don't need to remove anything to get enough drag.

I would suggest you just need a really clean fan and grille. Removing everything actually stuffs up the calculation in the monitor, The later monitors got smarter and your pace information will be wrong as the monitor is seeing something outside the range that it needs to run the calculation on.

The holes in the Model D/E stainless grille look clean but over time the dust and grime gradually builds up round the outside of the holes reducing their effective area. You need soapy water and a paint brush to really clean it then hit it with compressed air.

Drag factor should be over 200 on a clean set-up. I find that even 180 is brutal on the lower back at low ratings like 18spm. That's plenty "Intense" enough for me, even after 30 minutes.

Has nothing to do with the ring. A clean skierg has a 250 ish drag max, without the ring in the fan.

You could, the other way around, put a ring in, for a row erg, to lower the drag.
