Anterior shoulder pain

Post by alpkan » April 24th, 2021, 6:16 am

Hello all,
I started with rowing last year. After 6 months, I started having sharp pain in front of my shoulder. It happens when I move my entire shoulder forward. Arm movements do not cause pain, just moving the whole shoulder out to the front hurts like hell. Probably I was rowing in a bad, forward shoulder position instead of keeping my shoulder blades close. Anyone experienced something similar? Thanks.

I can't say I have ever had really bad shoulder pain but they are a complex muscle group and are prone to imbalances, especially if you don't train the rotator cuffs.

Do you do much mobility and stretching? Rowing will always be posterior dominant, so you do need to work on press ups, planks, shoulder presses etc for the anterior.

With the usual disclaimer that I am not a medical professional...

My guess for anterior shoulder pain is biceps tendinitis. If so you really should get an assessment firm a professional) then you might find that the symptoms can be relieved by really focusing on pulling with the elbows and obviating the hand as just hooks. That should help get the lats doing more of the work.
