i recently developed soreness in my right wrist when doing long erg sessions (40+ min). It wasn't very severe, but I've been cutting my workouts short to avoid an overuse injury.
Today I used a wrist wrap from the local Powerhouse gym. It seemed to help.
I am interested in knowing if this is a common problem. Any suggestions?

Yes sore wrists are a common problem. Your stroke rate is probably too low for your pace, and you're putting too much pressure on your wrists.
I would stop rowing until they heal, and soak them in cold water adding ice cubes.
Then when they're healed and you row again, use a proper stroke rating for the paces that you row.

I had some wrist trouble using the D handle and switched to a C style for a while. I used wrist straps too.
I believe I 'cured' it by flipping the handle over and erging underhanded for 5 minutes every now and then. My time during that part of the session was a little slower, however I built up strength in muscles on the inside of my forearm that weren't getting as much of a workout as the outside. I always do some of my workout in 'undhand' mode and haven't had the wrist thing come back.

For six years I've had two titanium plates and four giant drywall screws (that's what they look like, anyway) in my right wrist. That wrist is prone to irritation, enough that I now use the computer mouse with my left hand exclusively, even though I'm right handed, and even though I do a lot of precise detail work with the mouse. Peeling potatoes or cutting with scissors? Forget about it.
BUT... erging never bothers my wrist. I have a Model C with the original handle, and I keep a very loose grip on the bar, fingers just hooked around, thumbs resting on top, pinkies often hanging off the ends.
