Back Pain between Shoulder Blades

Post by asurower » December 4th, 2012, 12:44 pm

Hey everyone, first post on here.

I was rowing this morning (sweep, port) during our normal warm-up pick drills and once we extended to full slide a had a pain in my upper back between my shoulder blades. The pain was more like a strong pressure pocket that occurs in your knuckles sometimes and then you can typically crack them in order for it to dissipate. We finished off the warm up and I tried turning in order to crack my back and I couldn't (and still cant) get it to crack. The more I tried the worse the pain got so I obviously stopped trying and tried to deal with it for the rest of practice.

Throughout practice it got worse as we increased power so I ended up stopping for the day. I tried erging afterwards to see if it was just the turning motion but even on the erg it didn't help. I'm 22 and in my third year of collegiate sweep rowing and have never had a problem like this before. We attended a regatta on Sunday but nothing in my back feels or looks swollen so I don't think that is the cause. Has anyone had any problems like this before or known any remedies? We have our final 2k test of the Fall season tomorrow.

There may be some sacroiliac joint damage or the spine is damaged. Just consult your physician, he may diagnose what the exact issue. Till than apply some massage over the affected area.
