My Age

Hello. I have been rowing on & off for a number of years. My latest injury (not related to the ERG) was a blood clot in my left leg. I was careful to have my leg heal before continuing on the ERG. So that brings me to my current age. I am 74 and hope to start again. Is 74 to old to start again? I know to start slowly and build up again. Any advice on age? Thank you! MarvinH

DVT? On blood thinners? Cleared for activity, specifically erging, by your MD?

Yes. Blood clot was from DVT. I was on Eliquis for about 5 months and the clot is cleared. I just had a physical with an EKG. I didn't mention specifically to ERG, but my physical was good. Thanks for your reply. MarvinH

I have a family friend missing a leg owing to a DVT. You have both of yours. You can row but should you? If you were shy about asking the attending physician after treatment, ask now. You still get to decide for yourself.

Drop a query to @cyclingman1. He's been through the same thing, and is your age. I believe that he's rowing strongly again.

If/when your MD clears you, go slow & easy. Provided you're healthy otherwise, 74 is not too old to restart. Just remember, you're not 20 anymore (none of us are). Although your brain may try and convince you that you are!
All the best to you.

Yep, this is all that needs to be said

Hi jackarabit. Yes, I will specifically ask my physician about rowing after the DVT. Thanks for the advice. MarvinH

As others have said, check with your physician, but as far as the age part - it is never too old to start.
Also, there are few people here, including Cyclingman and myself, who continue to row after having DVTs, without any issues.
Good luck with it all, and stay healthy.
David

Thank you everyone for your insightful replies regarding rowing after a DVT blood clot in the leg and my age (74). I just spoke to my physician and he gave me clearance to go back to rowing. I was on Eliquis for a few months and that resolved the DVT clot. He did say some residual swelling could take a long time to go down. That is normal and the clot has become hardened so there is very little chance it will break off. So thank you again. This is a wonderful forum with great knowledge between all of us. MarvinH

I had a DVT (and bilateral PE) in January and once I was fully recovered, I discovered that rowing was painful in the area where the DVT occurred (back of the leg, just above and below the knee, or the worst possible spot for compression while rowing). I know that DVT's can leave permanent damage to the valves in the veins, as well as scar tissue from the clot itself. Maybe the pain would have resolved with time, but I chose to sell the rower and buy a bikeerg, which I love.

Any advice on age?
Ignore it and keep fit. Use the erg and whatever else you can (bike, boots) to help lose weight too. At 5'11 212 lb is too much.
I'm 80 and pull 5 days a week when at home, from 5 to 7k, usually 5 minute intervals + 1-2 minutes rest. HR 120 or lower, Pace 120 W or lower too. Two hours exercise a day is better than one. Diet: mostly fruit and vegetables.
Last bout in the hills on that diet took 5kg off me in a month. Today 82 kg = 180lb, H=1.85. Problem now is keeping it off.

Looks like you need to update the stats in your signature.

Right, thanks. After Xmas it'll likely get back to 87 if still alive.
