The 2008 Team Moto Madmen and Women
Add another 21,097m to our total, folks. I just did a half (1:38:13.8). Kudos to all of you who do fulls. You guys are beasts! I started to bonk at the 1-hour, 20-minute mark (about 4000m to go). Liver glycogen was on E so I ran to the fridge to grab a Gatorade. I know better but started the row with only two water bottles by my side. Anyway, if anyone is contemplating a half- or a full-marathon, I recommend having some carbs around. Once I polished that off, I cruised home.

Welcome Tim, Michelle, Dan, Dillon, LiteTruckRider and everybody else that joined recently. I looked at the team list and there are many names on it now and that's a good sign because I go back to work on Monday so I don't think I can keep rowing full montys every day after that. Plus I know I have an out-of town trip coming up this month so that is five whole days without a rower!
So Tim, I was checking out RacerXVT and I came across this:

I want to pimp my rower out now!
Do you have any other pictures of what people have done to customize their machines? I ride KTM so I'm thinking orange, black and silver but I need some ideas! The two things that stand out on James' machine are the TransformX bars (saving up for my own) and the seat. Do you have any info on what was done to his seat? It looks pretty comfy.

Wow. You are much faster than I am over longer distances. If that isn't proof that intervals work, then I don't know what is. It's also great motivation for me to go harder.C3H6O3 wrote:Add another 21,097m to our total, folks. I just did a half (1:38:13.8). Kudos to all of you who do fulls. You guys are beasts! Steve, that's pretty quick for a 1/2, at least for me it is. It that total time including breaks, or rowing time only? I don't know if I'll ever be able to get my times down that low, cuz I have to stop & check my glucose levels every 1/2 hour or so. Maybe if I can talk my Dr. into letting me get one of those continuous monitors so I can keep an eye on it all during the row I can just drink gatorade when I see it getting too low.C3H6O3 wrote:Add another 21,097m to our total, folks. Multiple marathons in a week. Wow! Sean you are definitely an animal.

The funny thing is, if I hadn't started to bonk and subsequently gotten off to get the Gatorade, I feel confident that I could have gone at least 1:35:00 if not a 1:33:00 which was my pace with about 4000m to go. It is my mission (always has been) to destroy the myth of the 'aerobic base'; much to 2whlrcr's chagrin, I'm sureRadioFlyer wrote:Wow. You are much faster than I am over longer distances. Just kidding, Michael.

When I do a marathon or a 1/2 I have tons of food around. I have even done a marathon on a paddle adaptor where you don't use your legs and the only thing that saved me was my wife brought me cheese cake. I was a hurtin bucharoo. Once the suger, fat and gram cracker crust hit I was alright with the world. Now I stick with GU and Cytomax.(doesn't taste half as good as the cheese cake!)

Ha ha ha Steve, you just proved my point. You have no aerobic base and bonked at 1:20 minutes. That should never happen. But I will forgive you, because your body has no training beyond 30 minutes. Just think how fast your intervals will be and moto speeds will climb, after you get another 100 1/2 marathons in you.

Sounds like the marketing guys should start paying a little more attention to us. Anybody who's on this team is most likely a competitive racer or trail rider interested in improving their perfomance. The Concept 2 is an excellent tool for us.GREGH wrote:Hey easy number 1 I have to work with them and #2 The on-water guys pay the bills. It is funny how I am fielding alot of comments like "Wow those guys work out but they have a motor!" Man that chaps my hind end. Keep up the good work. - Greg
I can't imagine that the numbers for competitive rowers is that great, especially outside the college ranks. Here is a huge market just waiting to be tapped. And with showings at Loretta Lynn's and other venues, it looks like corporate is might be trying. But when they are surprised we are rowing, maybe they still don't understand our sport?
Anyway, when you start selling rowers to moto guys, you can send my commissions to....bikerdr@you.......

We need to keep spreading the word so that I can continue to hang out with the racing and trail riding community. They are more fun to talk to. I agree that it is the best form of training next to being on the bike. Sorry to all the cyclist out there but you can get more out of the rower in less time and they are not out on the road where anything can happen. I even sold a rower to John Tomac and that dude was one of the best Mountain bikers of all time. He is training Ben Townley but I just heard he might be out for the start of the SX season.

I use RowPro & if I set it up for a 1/2 marathon, the time continues when I take a break. If I do a just row & wind up rowing 21,097 meters, the time stops when I take a break. I tried doing a continuous 1/2 marathon without stopping to check glucose levels. Just kept drinking gatorade & ate a power bar beforehand. Cut 8 minutes off my time, but I'm still really slow. I need to do more interval training so I can do more work. I could probably have done it in less time, but I want to keep my heartbeat under 150.C3H6O3 wrote:Total time, I believe. Does the clock stop when you stop rowing? I never checked. In either case, I only got off the rower once (to get the Gatorade).LiteTruckRider wrote:Steve, that's pretty quick for a 1/2, at least for me it is. Hey Team, I just wanted to say hi. I know I haven't been logging in allot of meters this week but I plan on doing longer distances on the weekends. I do Crossfit during the week and anyone who knows about Crossfit knows that the work outs are a muther......so with that said I have a couple Q's.
The only time I have really used a C2 is during Crossfit workouts, what exact distance is a marathon on a rower? I keep seeing the term "erg", what is that? Also, with the long distances that are done in one session what do you set the resistance on? Finally, how do you get a picture to show up on the left when you post?
And Greg I know what you mean when you say that "you are home", I know exactly what you mean, the people are great, that is what makes this sport so awesome. A1 in 2 days!
