Team Competition Question

Post by bernd57 » October 25th, 2013, 10:28 am

I am wondering how mixed team competitions work. Specifically, since I am older and thus unlikely to find enough rowers in my area to have a competition, it would seem that the only way I can participate is to join a team of younger rowers. Given that I am 56, how would that work? I would love to get competitive but it also would not be fair to other rowers on my team to have to "allow" me to join with them on a team..
Hoping to get some input from someone who understands this conundrum.

Thanks.

The main team competition is the CTC (cross team challenge) which floats boats of five rowers, one of whom must be lightweight and another female. There are no age categories here.

The C2 rankings allow you to claim 'tandem' records with one other person of the same age of either gender. It is also possible to row larger team records in age categories.

All major competitions for individuals have age categories as do the C2 rankings and the Nonathlon.

The Rowing Company also promotes a competition in age categories.

I haven't heard of any specific team competitions which are divided into age-groups.

EDIT: I'd like to add that the teams in the CTC are very happy to accept rowers of all standards, ages and weight and gender categories. Participation is the key; older rowers, I'm pushing 65 myself, may find themselves qualifying for lower boats in the rankings.

Joe

The specification, "in my area," suggests that you are referring rowing competitions on the water, since indoor rowing teams are usually not restricted to specific areas, but are world wide. If by area you meant category (age, etc.) then Joe's advice is appropriate. If you meant the area in which you reside, it depends on what kind of OTW rowing clubs are near enough to use.
