Great points. Like I said, an interesting subject. And a very complex one. My point on training the mind comes from some training programs I did when I was serving. How true it is I don’t know, but was told that a human will only push itself to 5% of actual ability where a horse will go to destruction. The training we’d be put through was adapting yourself to push those boundaries.

Obviously, my opinion is subjective, I am by no means an expert in this field, just a competitive fella that likes to punish myself! :)

A horse will ride until it drops, but these are horses that have been "broken" and are obeying their riders. It would be interesting to know how hard a horse pushes itself in the wild, especially when not running for its life! I think any %age is meaningless, but there are plenty of examples of people who have performed well beyond where they believed their limits were when they really needed to.
56, lightweight in pace and by gravity. Currently training 3-4 times a week after a break to slowly regain the pitiful fitness I achieved a few years ago. Free Spirit, come join us http://www.freespiritsrowing.com/forum/

Oh I completely agree, the percentages are completely arbitrary. It’s just one of those analogies I picked up in life that spurs me on when things are getting tough! :)
