Hi All,

Is anyone on the board in the Toronto area thinking of going to the CIRC-Toronto division regatta?
I have been in touch with the administrators and had planned on signing up a few weeks ago but see that still, the registration numbers are VERY low.

In order to win a medal, you have to actually beat someone - lol. (go figure!)
There is only 1 other competitor in the Mens 30-39 Open.

I'm pretty new to rowing but thought the experience would be unique and would give me something to train for more seriously for next year. Has anyone attended one of these CIRC events? Is there often a good turnout? Is it worth paying the $35 registration fee and driving down to the city if only to race myself or 1 other person? for the experience?

If you don't like the taste of low-hanging fruit, someone else will. The worst you can do is last or next to last. If convenient, do it for the competitive experience. Is there an open event?

There is the Masters Men Open (30-39) and then a Senior Men Open.
Currently the Masters Men Open only has 1 registrant from a rowing club who I'm sure will blast me out of the water (pun intended!)

The 30-39 group has always been under represented. In the last three years there have been 2, 0 and 1 entrant.
I have raced here in the 40-49 since 2008 I think and won a few times, but last year finally got tired of the 8:30 race and raced in the Senior race in the afternoon. I knew I wasn't going to win but raced anyway. There were a few of us old guys in that race and I found it fun even though the winners were almost 30 seconds faster.

There is usually a flurry of late entries, mine included, so I would encourage you to race. Just because he rows at a rowing club doesn't necessarily mean he's fast.

Wow thanks so much for your input David, really appreciate that. Not alot of us Canadians on here from what I've seen.
I was wondering if there would any late registrants but looked at last years numbers and wasn't overly optimistic.

I suppose it would be cool to have my name appear on a leaderboard of any kind, regardless if i'm first or last place haha. i've got a little under a month to train hard.
Will you be attending this year David? Would be cool to meet some people.

Its lost a bit of steam recently with people going to Facebook, but there are still a few hard core posters. If you register there you can read the blogs too something the US forum lacks. I have a training diary there and I post my daily training. I find the blogs keep me motivated (most of the time) and I get to read what others are doing.

Racing is only a small part of the erg community. There are online challenges: C2CTC http://c2ctc.com/ and the Indoor Rowers League http://indoorrowers.org/en/irwlmenu as well as each team has its own monthly challenge.

I am planning on racing next month but haven't decided on whether it will be the 40-49 or the Senior Open event. More likely to be the later one though as I hate racing at 8:30.

I'm still debating registering as there is still only one individual signed up. I am hoping to see a few more sign-ups before the deadline of January 29. Will see what happens.
I see most folks at these things wear "rowing clothes" something I don't own and don't really intend on buying haha. Is there any detriment to wearing a plain cotton tee and running shorts? Aside from not looking the part.

You can wear whatever you like. Racing is pretty fun, it brings the best in you.

Having seen Rocket Roy Brook wearing his cycling bib shorts on too many occasions you can wear anything you like as long as the delicate bits are covered.

Wearing a Uni is certainly not required and many don't.

There are two entries in the 30-39 now, both from Argonaut. Remember, just because you row on the water, doesn't make you fast on the erg.

Looks like I'll be racing 40-49 this year and coping with the early start. I'll be wearing a Uni though.

And as for Roy's bib...

LOL that bib sounds TOO gross!
I'm gonna tackle a 2000m tonight or tomorrow. If I hit close to the 7:00 flat mark I am going to sign up as I think on race day given the adrenaline and testosterone I'll be able to shave some time off of even that.

Geez, you guys, I've seen grosser stuff than that in Sunday School. What do you all do at a bike race? Blush.
