Your music legends

Post by Holly62 » July 1st, 2022, 1:32 pm

OK, just a bit of fun to gel us more as a group...

Spam people leave now 😳

Here we go, name a track and an artist from each decade that you've been alive, rules are that you must own the track and that it has had an impact on your life that you're prepared to share with us all.
I think we'll learn about each other and have fun in the process...
Rowing keeps your brain active, bike erg and ski erg people are by their own admission a little weird.
Maybe just maybe we'll get a rowing super team together, win something 😳

OK I'll start
Sixties, yes I'm really that old, I'm going to kick off with riders on the storm by the doors.
The first of many trips to the nurburgring in Germany, four bikes a gsxr, a vfr, my friend Lee (rip) on his fireblade and yours truly on her much loved zx9r f2... It rained obviously all the way and as we rode mostly well above the speed limit, it was a case of smooth throttle control, my mp3 got stuck on this doors track for two hours, hence I love it so.
Seventies, walking on the moon by the police, I lost my virginity to this track, nuff said.
Eighties, I had one of the first batch of 350lc in the country and we went big bike hunting, ate suzuki 750s for breakfast. But the track of the decade, there where so many was, radio gaga, because I heard Freddie sing it live.
90s oh my... The club years.... Got to be has to be born slippy..
A good many prodigy and club mixes, suzie lost her life and I never returned to Germany.
I'll come back to this thread.

So meany choices, at least for the 20th century. 21st century, not so much. Genres have become very niche, and none suit me.

Fifties: Ray Charles at Newport. The whole album, but "I've got a woman."
Sixties: Layla, Derek and the Dominoes. Too bad the lead singer has joined the dark side.
Seventies: The Wall, Pink Floyd. The whole album, but "Another brick in the wall"
Eighties: Running up that hill, Kate Bush.
Nineties: You Oughta Know, Alanis Morissette

Wow, now this is going to be something I'm going to need to think about, and I'd probably change my mind every time I answered it.

I know this is a decade too early, but if i could say 60s it would be Stevie Wonder - I Was Made To Love Her. I remember listening to my Mum's 7 inch of this on repeat, and it was my first taste of soul music.

70s- it might be Billy Joel- Piano Man, or Queen Bohemian Rhapsody. Both of these were played over and over by parents, or possibly Earth Wind & Fire- September: the second song at my wedding, and my wife goes crazy when this comes on.

80s- Prince- When Doves Cry. Bought it on seven inch, along with Billy Idol - Rebel Yell, and was obsessed with Prince. Madness Our House would also be up there. I remember buying this with my Grandad, after he said I could buy a single. He was a wonderful man, so it's a great memory of him. Relax and Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood would have to be contenders too, as they totally blew my mind, and this isn't even mentioning The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays.

90s- I'm going to have to also come back to this

It’s too hard!
I can’t pick just one song from the 70s or 80s, and I don’t know any songs from the last 20 years, lol.
60s - She Loves You - as there has to be a Beatles song in there.
After that I need maybe one song per year.

I'd also add NWA's album Straight Outta Compton. My best mate & I found an unmarked cassette tape in Birmingham (we were there playing a basketball game) and it was a massive shock when we played it as impressionable 15 year olds.

I also remember hearing Yes, and I think it was the 90125 album (I only really remember Owner of a Lonely Heart) when I was about nine years old. It was a cassette that was had a computer game on one side, and the Yes album on the other, which was totally unexpected. I assume that it was from someone who was posh enough to have tape to tape recording! I didn't even know who it was for a few years, I just knew I liked it.

It really is too hard, because every time I have a rethink about a decade I change my mind, and I think it's because every track brings along an emotional response inclusive of baggage some great some bloody aweful.
I've been treading much more softly through my music collection, some tracks have a great deal of emotional pain attached, and were acquired to help me get through that pain, so I must try to be careful..
On a more cheerful note I knocked four and a half seconds off my 10k time today, listening to a club mix from 98, that only had two tracks that I actually liked.

Wow - there are bands other than Jethro Tull? Who knew? Put me down as an Ian Anderson fan for all decades and Locomotive Breath as a favorite song but hard to pick one. Of course tomorrow Led Zeppelin will rise… Agree it’s too hard!

damn... i was a 60s kid and until i left home in 1980 at 17 i had limited exposure to music. to be honest the only music we had in the house was dad playing his mandolin to Ivan Rebroff and the odd night out to the Sunday dances where us kids used to sit and watch the OLD people dance.
my first music that i bought and still own was the beach boys. which you could say was 70s music. then i really got into rock and hard rock in the mid 80s.
so 80s for me would be Queen Bohemian rhapsody(have every Queen album) (although late 80s a pivotal piece of music for me was Def Leppard Hysteria)
90s would be a continuation but added in a lot of pink floyd, Led Zepp etc
2000s on nothing really appeals to me so its back to 80s rock/hard rock until i die pretty much

Def Leppard was my first gig. I got a coach with a mate to Birmingham NEC to watch them, I think in 1985. I still remember hearing 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' for the first time in HMV (a music store). They were a gateway into other rock music, then punk and industrial music

Hi Eric
Out of all the Queen albums, I too really enjoyed bohemian rhapsody. Did you buy the album or just the single... Out of all the other albums which gave you the most pleasure?

Absolutely, it's like a moment in time strikes a track that means something to so many people, it happens at least once a year, although for the last decade, I can't think of being struck once by anything, other than how awful music has become.

A Night at the Opera. while it has Bohemian Rhapsody i also really like death on two legs and you're my best friend . I havent got any as singles just the albums and Cds. i must admit that Queens greatest hits volume 2 is exceptional but as a mix album. another good album is Queen Highlander. classic.

nice. in the 80s they would have been exceptional as a concert. my first concert   was hot chocolate... as a 19yo it was an eye opener to concerts. from recollection i scored that night as well  i always regret not seeing Queen when they came to NZ in 1987 but i believe that i was overseas at the time on deployment with the Army. I havent been to a concert in years. i think the last one i went to was the stones here in NZ with Nickleback as the front band. we got what we thought were cheap seats but ended up about 10m from the stage at eye level with the band. was freaking awesome.

I've never been into specific tracks and tend to gravitate to the less popularized tunes, so I'm going to stick with the artists that inspired me.

In the 70's, Led Zeppelin was it, although my very 1st album was Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell. I got a new stereo system when I was 13, I was at the store with Mom, saw the cool album art, and I had to have it. I also dug Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

In the 80's, I listened to and loved a lot of classic rock, but if I had to choose one artist, it would be Dave Matthews. I vividly remember seeing him and his band on David Letterman before anyone knew of them. They came out, performed Ants Marching, and I turned to my buddy and said "These guys are gonna be big."

In the 90's, I discovered The Grateful Dead and especially Jerry Garcia. I just loved how they wandered off while jamming and not stopping until they couldn't go any further.

In the 00's, I got into Richard Thompson and Tom Waits. I still listen to their music often.

In the 10's and 20's, Jazz took hold and I listen to that more than anything else. I lean towards the improvisational stuff especially piano and bass centered material.
