VR rowing? Anyone ever try it out?

So I recently discovered an app called Holofit that essentially throws in VR to the mix, letting you simulate your rows by putting a headset on when rowing. Seemed really immersive and pretty neat to me (I'm kinda heavily into tech...).
I was actually thinking to get a VR headset anyway for gaming-related purposes so this might be enough to push me over the edge. The thing is I just don't know where to start and what would be best for me. Do I start out small and go for something like the Oculus Rift S or do I go all out and get the Valve Index?
I've looked at comparisons and buyer's guides (there's a useful chart at the bottom of this guide), but I'm not really well-versed enough to know how important per-eye resolution and field of view range is.
If anyone has any insight into this, I'd love to hear what you think. Is VR rowing even something that works well?
TIA!
