most popular software

Post by emptybeer » April 2nd, 2007, 7:53 pm

I'm thinking of getting online racing software. I know I'm asking pretty ambiguous questions, but what is the most popular and what is the best?

I'm gonna guess the most popular is Rowpro as that is the one most people seem to use.

Supercanoa has a better price/performance ratio.

Obviously, I like the price. It doesn't seem to have a very large user base. Can you schedule your own race/training session with other online users or are you limited to what SC has scheduled?

Don't know. I don't have my own erg. You'd have to ask Marilyn.

Rowpro is the obvious choice. Online rowing and racing with rowpro is great, and as far as I know, no one is using the old erow server anymore; all of the old erow users have migrated over to rowpro and/or the rowpro race server. My impression is that online racing though has slowed down for the past 6 months. My guess is that this is because people are waiting for version 2.1 of rowpro, that will include the new racing protocol. There had been chronic stability problems with racing, particularly with large fields of 5 or more people. 2.1 is supposed to be released any day now, which hopefully means in the next 3 months.

Even now though weekends are popular for races/rows, and if you schedule a row generally in the middle of the day on a weekend, you will get other people to sign up. In the past, the best and most exciting races were part of "online racing series" in which a group of us agreed in advance to race every week over a variety of distances, and kept stats and points over time.

I have asked and never really gotten an answer from Marilyn about how supercanoa and the software works. I think there have been translation issues, so I think it would help if a native English speaking user posted a complete description and user guide of how races work on supercanoa. I did download and tested the software, so for free it is worth exploring, but the reality is that the future of online rowing is racing with rowpro.
