Excited to be off again!

Post by dharma66 » April 8th, 2022, 8:53 am

Some years back, my boss at work was a keen rower, and talked me into trying the rowing machine for weightloss.
I ended up getting quite into it, following programs from the old UK website that worked out routines for you based on goals.
Eventually, I lost a total of about 60 pounds (though still needed to lose another 40 or so), and eventually built up to training 5 times a week, and rowing a half marathon.

Welcome to the forum. : )

If you lost that much weight you must have also made some significant changes to your diet. If so, what were they?
If not, congratulations, that a heck of a lot to lose by exercise.

Yeah… my diet changed quite a lot!

Also, I somehow lost most of my previous post, so I’ll a few more details, but first, diet.

Basically, I started tracking calories and macros, and made sure I logged everything that went into my mouth that wasn’t water or air!

I tried to ensure I got enough protein, and stuck to a calorie limit, and didn’t worry too much about fat/carb balance, as it seemed to mostly sort itself out by just trying to eat more healthily.

To continue where I left off…

After losing that weight, which is now nearly 10 years ago, I’ve continued to fluctuate, but now I tend fluctuate around 250-270#, rather than 300-320.

I picked up a bad knee, and haven’t rowed for a good 8-9 years, ut during lockdown I made an effort to get a bit fitter, if not necessarily much lighter. I’ve been able to return to martial arts training for the first time in more than 20 years.

Then on holiday (vacation) last October, the place we stayed had a RowErg in the gym, and I tried it again. I was delighted to find my knee held up really well, and I got in 6 steady 5k’s in the two weeks I was there.

I’ve been building a basic bit of home gym kit over the lockdowns, so rather than rejoin a gym, I decided I would purchase a RowErg.

It’s taken until now to convince my wife it’s a good idea, and to re-arrange the garage to make space, but yesterday I placed my order.

I’m expecting delivery on 20th April, and as the title says, I’m really excited to be off again!
