Diabetic..the C2 effect

Post by plymjack » February 17th, 2016, 5:44 am

OK...Im 55, have been 95-110 kilos all my adult life. Was diagnosed diabetic 10 years ago (needing insulin due to a failure to produce my own).

Tried various diets and half hearted exercise plans but had not effect. MY morning levels have been between 8 & 10 for most of the time (dosing 40-50cc twice a day) Having wasted money on gyms and so on my wife suggest a rowing machine. Did some research as decided to go for the C2, Set up it in a spare room. Really easy to just get up do my time and then start my day!

I like cycling and was happy doing 30 mins at the gym but always have been disappointing by my upper body and belly. (A life of eating Full English Breakfasts in the Navy ensured!). Rowing certainly will help with that with luck.

So I started 2 weeks ago.... setting my self a target of 10mins a day, 6 days a week. Plan to increase to 30 mins (3 or 4 times a week) over 40 weeks.

So hows it going I hear you ask....... well surprisingly well... after just a few days I noticed by levels dropped down to 7-9 AND I reduced my dosing to just 20-30cc each evening!! Quickly dropped to 100kg so will now see how that goes, we have always tried to eat well so have not made any changes to my diet. If I can get to 90Kg on this regime I will be delighted.

Will hope to update here was a month.....

PS Have already uploaded my PBs to rankings for 100m & 2000m and pleased to be only 3/4 down the table!

Mwalsh, how has it been going? I have had T1 for almost 30 years. Use the erg pretty much every day. Various complaints will sideline me for months, and then when getting back, the first couple weeks are a real struggle.

A guy on our Sunday program the other day started at 108Kg and was a diabetic, dropped his weight to the 80 mark and has come off all the medication.

He has done it by diet, low to no carbs and 2 hours walking each day. The key appears to be the weight loss through exercise.

Wouldn't put too much emphasis on the diet, its a simple equation more energy out than energy in equals weight loss. You can eat what you want, you simply have to workout like a manic over the age of 40 if you still want to eat anything and throw in a bit of alcohol as well makes it even harder.

Well the key actually is not to get overweight and get Type 2 diabetes in the first place.

If I cannot dine out, eat a curry and drink wine and beer and a bar of chocolate every week then life is not worth living ! Sure as hell not going to live on grilled chicken breast and no carbs so just a plate of boiled veg, thats really exciting !

Eat what you want, as close to a sensible balanced diet as you can and train to match your energy intake, its a simple as that.

I agree. I you should eat things you like, as long as you don't go overboard.
Just eat "as close to a sensible balanced diet as you can and train to match your energy intake".

I agree as well!! Life would be sh!t if you couldn't still enjoy some beers, Indian takeaways, pizzas, or chocolate bars etc. You just need to use some basic common sense not to binge on stuff like this and eat them in moderation. I still enjoy all of these things as part of my healthy diet, and exercise regime. Indian takeaway once per month, or a nice big pizza does me no harm!!!! And i am still slowly losing the pounds because i like to workout very often, and keep track of my daily calorie intake which helps.

Long time lurker and big fan of your informative posts.

However, beg to differ re palatability of carb-free eating. It's not that impossible to live a happy life guzzling cheese, greek yoghurt, eggs, bacon, salmon steaks, grass fed beef, bacon, butter, cruciferous/leafy vegetables, Macadamia nuts, and so on. Beer is (sadly) right out.

Obviously you don't need to even consider this, given your level of fitness.

One further thing to contemplate: People get overweight because they develop hyperinsulinaemia/insulin resistance --> permanent state of fat storage mode and no way to actually burn said fat. That's the way the causal arrow runs. Not vice-versa. One way to avoid it is to start out virtuous and keep it up forever. Not a bad idea... but in the absence of time travel and second chances, it's the greek yoghurt for me, alas :)
