Muscle or joint contraindications.

Post by bob » February 14th, 2009, 2:41 pm

I was curious if rowing can cause joint pain or tendonitis from the continuous movement even with good technique? I'm asking because i've just started rowing and want to make sure before i go into it full steam. Thanks.

Yes, you can injure yourself by exertion from rowing - typically it's because of bad technique, too high a setting on the damper and/or doing too much too early. You have to start at a pace and distance that you are comfortable with, but don't be afraid to push yourself once in a while. Once you've erged for a few weeks, then you can really step it up.

If you've been an athlete before, you should have fewer problems with what I said above, but be sure to stretch AFTER a warmup and after a piece. Never stretch muscles that haven't been warmed up. And if you do feel pain, stop rowing, stretch, give it a day, and try again.

Thanks for the advice. I am just starting out so basically i'm learning technique now. I know it's not a good idea to stretch prior to rowing because it diminishes the firing power of the muscles to contract. That goes for resistance training too. If i feel pain, i will definitely lay off for awhile. I did experience some the next day after my first try on the row, but i think that was due to DOMS. (delayed onset muscle soreness)
