Glad to see someone besides Frank on top. I was beginning to think this was rigged.

Jeff

Congrats to Pieter.

I don't think the scoring should be changed or adjusted, but I have a question for future information. I know that several of us in the Sandbaggers 1k did not actually sandbag, we rowed with handicaps below our SB and sometimes PB times. Mark's handicap was 12 secs below PB for example. Bill finished close to 10 secs below his SB/PB. This wasn't the first week either I think that people rowed handicaps below their PB/SB (I think Krysta did this in earlier weeks).

Is this adjusted for in the scoring at all, or are people who row with handicap's below their SB/PB times just voluntarly giving up that chance for bonus points in order to improve the competition in that race?

Sometimes the race masters send me the data. In the case of the Sandbaggers 1K I pulled the numbers from what was published here in the forum. If there are better numbers just point me to them or send me an e-mail. I spend a lot of time every week tracking down data for the scoring but I still miss things.

Technically the start delays can be set to whatever but the scoring should be based on the rower's PB/SB time. If they don't have a PB/SB at the distance being contested we can calculate one based on previous results at other distances using the Nonathlon score to predict the time.

Frank

I can understand that setting up fair handicaps can be a real headache for the race masters. However towards the end of the Fall series people are going to start picking the eyes out of it after perusing through the results.

As an example, in the fast fall handicap 1 K race someone looking for vital points may have questioned the result. Jaap and myself were last to start with a 15 second delay based on a 3.04 handicap. If handicaps are meant to make everyone cross the line together then Pieter who won the race in 3.11 and a net time of 3.06, who started 10 seconds before us, should have had a 10 second delay and not 5 second delay to finish about the same time as Hennie, Jaap and myself (around 3.15). That way he would have come second and consequently changed the overall leader board.

On the other hand you could argue that Pieter put in a great race, way above expectations, and should get full congratulations for it. Pedro or Frank who are close to Pieter on the leader board may have viewed it differently if it was the last handicap race. There's always going to be someone unhappy with the handicap process so I try not to take handicap races too seriously.

That's why I much prefer the straight races where there can be no dispute with the result. In the fast fall races Jaap, Andreas and myself have always started last together so at least we get head to head close competition. Our SBs are not equal. I say bring on the 1K straight race and let's see how many go sub 3.

Rockin Roland

Hey, sub 3 isn't a problem...of course I'll have another 100m to get to the finish.

Handicap races need to be kept fun and not taken too seriously, unless there's a history of performance at a certain level. Golf handicaps use the average of several recent scores, but we don't have that luxury, so we have to take the good with the bad. I don't really worry about the scoring for this, because I just love the camaradarie of racing. (And the M40H is a tough bracket to score on the nonathlon scores).

I'll have an opportunity to game the system on the 2k, since my PB is from July and is about 20 seconds slower than what my 4x1k workouts suggest I can do. For the 1k, I gave up about 8 seconds from my PB on the delay that would have won the heat, but I didn't feel that was fair, since my 1k PB came from an interval session. So, I'll be pulling seconds off for the HC race on the 2k to make it more fair and to have a close finish. I'd encourage anyone with more aggressive performance capabilities to accurately estimate their performance and adjust their HC time accordingly. (This should be a one way adjustment).

These races are great fun. I participate because it's a great way to bring out the best in me and what I see also in others.

It's fun to race against others and to see that there is always room for improvement.

Hennie

Andreas, on the other hand, is a big guy and he is all muscle. It's the attempt that counts.

Frank
