Lisa, Yes, DVT's are dangerous, and can migrate to the lungs. In my case, the clots are probably permanently in place in my legs. Thousands die every year from pulmonary clots. Xarelto or Coumadin are supposed to prevent more clots from forming. A misconception is that those meds dissolve the current clots. They do not. If one is lucky, the body absorbs them but that is usually only partially true. The clots invariably cause venous valve damage which can result in some permanent swelling of the leg. Compression stockings help with circulation. BTW, my DVT is inexplicable. I think that continual dehydration could have been a factor.

Some DVT situations are more benign than others. In my case, it laid me pretty low. Pain was intense. Had some serious pain meds in hospital and after getting out. But basically I have no restrictions on activities. It is what I can stand to do. So I am erging, bicycling, mowing the yard, etc - but at levels well below my normal. My fitness sucks. But I am getting better week by week. BTW, I'm not complaining. It's a challenge now. I believe that I can get back to my previous level. But you are right, we all have to keep a realistic perspective and keep trying.
Sorry for the long-winded reply. DVT's are a little weird - not an injury and not a disease, per se. So I decided to be a bit expansive about them and my experience. Hopefully, you all will not ever experience this.
