You are going to be pulling your hair out trying to get the PM5 to work with a usb drive.
The problems seem to be getting worse the more I try and use it.

I was going to suggest that the local YMCA gym do the update on new model Ds. Guess not! Jack

Went from requests to remove and replace the usb drive to 1853 error codes then constant code 44s and then finally it wouldn't recognize the usb drive.
I reformatted the drive and started over. Still receiving code 44s but the workouts are making it to the drive.
I am not using a bluetooth device so here are the errors I have experienced. They have all worked fine with my Garmin heart rate monitor.
V15 locked up on power curve screen
V16 would not let you save favorite workouts
V17 no problems
V18 hates the usb drive

I recently purchased a Concept Model D and PM5 which is connected to a PC which runs RowPro.
Started off with firmware v17 and found that the PC would often come up with "USB device not recognised" or some such after a reboot or coming out of sleep and Device Manager would have a yellow bang against it - I would have to remove the batteries on the PM5 and reboot PC to fix it.
I upgraded to v18 and this problem has pretty much entirely been fixed - so v18 has considerably improved USB connection reliability for me. I do not use a USB thumb drive though.

Just a data point that v18 has been working pretty well for me. No errors displayed and I believe only one session that went to memory instead of the USB stick (this used to happen frequently).
