LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Feeling pleased with myself, yesterday I passed the 3 million lifetime metres, and have so far managed to produce marathons daily, although this is taking a toll on my body (some of the chafing has turned into scabs), and even more on my mind (I really am wondering why I put myself through this).
Then I see Ed whizzing by, and grit my teeth, and think I can hang on for another three days! It is amazing the difference a bit of motivation can make. I watched "The boys of '36" while I was rowing a couple of days ago, the story of the US Olympic rowing team from the same year as Jesse Owens, and finished 15 minutes ahead of my average schedule!
For those interested, the Nonathlon seems to be open for business for season 2018! Go Lunies!

Hey - no gritting teeth... you are doing great. Love the friendly competition amongst us! Temps have hit the 115 range, I am out in it all day so I come home to air conditioning and row watching movies. If I was in the states meters would be down, but not much going on here. So rowing morning and evenings for now. Lots of new movies to watch...Shabana wrote:Feeling pleased with myself, yesterday I passed the 3 million lifetime metres, and have so far managed to produce marathons daily, although this is taking a toll on my body (some of the chafing has turned into scabs), and even more on my mind (I really am wondering why I put myself through this).

Side note: I use to get the soars - I now use a thick towel on the seat - works wonders no more soars and no sore backside when rowing long periods.
Happy Rowing,
Ed
Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Your numbers are very impressive. When I was rowing a lot of meters I used to get the good old butt blisters. I tried a number of things but ended up getting the thin little seat pads from C2. I know one of the Lunes likes two but I found that was too thick for me and one will do me. I did buy two though. Hmm, one as a back up? Yeah, well, something like that. Do a marathon for me.
Good going on the 3 mill and all the marathons. Very impressive. Ed two a day? wow!
Keep on rock'n all.

Seat pads....yep, marathon season is a good time to talk about them. Whether you use foam cushions, towels, gel seat pads (JL geL pads), sorbothane seat pads (sore no more sorbothane seat pads), bubble wrap or the Concept2 seat pad...they all serve to reduce the pressure on the bones and keep you from sliding about getting blisters. I have both the sorbothane "Sore No More" seat pad and the JL geL pad...and I prefer the sorbothane. It doesn't slide about on the rower seat. During the January Virtual Team Challenge, I was using both the seat pad and a towel for extra cushion.
Day 13 or 14 of 15....and the meters keep rolling in!
Thanks for the heads up on the 2018 nonathlon. Keith's already filled in a good many of the numbers, and is making great progress (staying well ahead of the newly forming pack!). Speed work is never very fun as bg (a wise woman) told me. Certainly not every erging session is about improving that time or distance...sometimes we just row or ski-erg. Whatever the exercise endeavor of the day, I try for at least 30-45 "active" minutes. A gallop around the neighborhood and onto the trails as the weather permits is a favorite of the two young hooligan pups - and OMG, if I didn't row, there's no way that I could manage them in that initial 200 yards from the house before they settle in and remember what heel really means. Yesterday I hauled the rowing machine onto the patio for a totally different erging experience (it didn't last long, but shows promise). In fact, if it's possible, I encourage you to relocate your erging machine for a whole new vista.
In a battle of marathoners, Ed's taken the lead and rung the cool half million meter bell first. Andrew is right there behind him. Friendly competition is a good motivator, and it is quite inspiring to see how many meters these guys are cranking out. Twofers on a marathon?? Uff da! It might be a one and done for a large portion of the Erging Universe! They have Moon Fever for sure. No slouches either for the rest of the team! Steady progress, and often at an uptick from the previous season, is being witnessed in all corners of the Luniverse! You'd think we'd all turned over a new logcard leaf! Keep it going!

But I am going to try to do at least a half marathon daily for the duration of the challenge; its a big ask, but after all,one definition of lunatic is an extremely foolish or eccentric person![]()

Well, yesterday I got a bit enthusiastic during the last 2000m of my marathon, and upped the pace. By the last 200m, I was trying to get the lowest per 500m time on the instantaneous display, and by the last stroke, I got it down to 1:38 (it has been a while since my PM3 has displayed that

After finishing today's marathon, I looked at the total on the log page, and I had only 12. I was sure I should have 13. An investigation revealed a row of 42,194 m for yesterday, I must have celebrated too early and coasted to a halt with 1 metre to go

Still, on the bright side, I get to join these people: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqhK55JVEd8, and I have a new goal for next year!!!

I only had one more row to do tomorrow to complete the challenge. And the missing metre must have spoilt the symmetry of my daily total (compounded by my late submission online, which meant I missed the boat yesterday). Good youtube, good attitude, and hopefully a good adult beverage. Or two. Or six.

Andrew why don't you try shimming the foot pad out? It wouldn't be hard to do I't would help with the chaffing

Challenge Stats (so far):

Andrew et al - if two halves make a whole....and a half moon is 21,097 m ....shouldn't it work out that a full moon is twice the distance of a half moon?

Summer arts season is here, and public art installations are some of my favorite things.. bunny trails of the mind just kind of fit right in. Australian artist Amanda Parer created a public art installation called Intrude that's been on a worldwide tour, and it's returning to Colorado in June. Five giant (7 story) inflatable rabbits will be on display in ski town Breckenridge June 1-4. Whoa. Must be like filling a hot air balloon.

Kind of a funny story to do with this, though it really wasn't at the time... 2 or 3 years ago I was doing half marathons fairly regularly, one day I decided to save myself a little and use a towel for some extra padding. It worked great for that intended purpose but as I quickly realized once I'd finished it also apparently changed things for me just enough that my muscles protested... vigorously, and I didn't want to move for several days after (as well as feeling a bit foolish). I learned that perhaps I should introduce new things slowly instead of jumping all in... there are times I like to do things the hard way.

Re: LUNA-TICS TEAM ROOM: Year-round "Looney" fun.
Thanks everyone for all the advice, I will be giving it all a go (especially Minnie's in regards to the drinks
)
Although I just failed on my challenge (the goal being to get everything documented in my logbook without any manual entries, just verified rows (looking at the Annual Metres Honour board https://log.concept2.com/challenges/season/2018/10000, there are a few entries that look as if they might be due to fat fingers, I don't want to put in entries "because I almost did that"), I managed to channel my frustration into an attempt to tick off one of my long-standing bucket list items.
To my amazement, and now barely able to sit down comfortably (and I don't care at all), I can now claim a sub three hour marathon (and my son was suitably impressed when I showed him a genuine 2:06.9 per 500 average pace). One thing is for sure, I'll never do that again! Of course, I am a lunie, but there are limits!
Time to follow Minnie's advice in spades I think!

Day 15 of 15 ! There is no antidote for moon fever...you just have to give it a go!
Lunacy prevails! Not only do we have personal bests, mega meters, and a treasure trove of things learned....we have The Return of Minnie the Mooner. Yes, Minnie has thrown down a half marathon...caught up in the spate of moon fever that's sweeping through the Lunie crew!
Speaking of things learned...
It is kind of amazing how small changes can produce unanticipated BIG effects. A day or so before riding the Bike MS150 a few years back, I decided to taper off from biking and thought "I'll just give this elliptical machine" a try. I couldn't believe how much muscle pain I was in the next day. You would have thought I'd had a bike crash, not an elliptical adventure. Of course, this "small change can equal big result" is a strategy we advocacy types also employ to make other things happen! But, we're Lunies, and sometimes we just throw ourselves into the spirit of the thing! Hmm...overall, while there are often unintended consequences...I do often employ the "full speed ahead and damn the torpedos" approach.Restless wrote: Kind of a funny story to do with this, though it really wasn't at the time... 2 or 3 years ago I was doing half marathons fairly regularly, one day I decided to save myself a little and use a towel for some extra padding.
