Stop PM5 monitor from switching off on long session

Post by smeeagain » April 17th, 2019, 1:25 pm

Hi,

I Hope someone can help. apologies if this has been asked before but I did use the search facilty but couldn't find an answer to my query (but may have used incorrect search criteria)

I'm planning to a session in about 12 months that will be around 8 hours or so (not an event just a personal thing) . I want to be able to get off the ergo and stretch, go to the loo etc.

When i get off, how do i stop the monitor switch off so i can carry on from where I left off when i get back on?

Thanks
Smee

1. You get four minutes.
2. If you press [UNITS] or [DISPLAY] you reset the four minute counter.
3. You can program the monitor for a max of 100,000m.
4. Running with Ergdata may keep the monitor alive (I've not, completely, tested that).
5. You can't "stop the monitor". The [BACK] button will terminate a workout and put you on a menu that times out after two minutes.

That's great thank you - I will look at this at the weekend. Purely as an aside, from your point number 3, how does it work when folks do a 24 hour ergo session? Obviously they are measuring time not metres, but can the machine be set to count down from/up to 24 hours?

Some folks when they do 24hrs they'll let the monitor stop during the breaks and add up the metres with a laptop and a spreadsheet.

You can set up an intervals workout of 900,000m (9 reps of 100,000m).

Hey Smee!

I did a marathon (w00t) in February which involved several extended breaks.

The way to keep the PM5 alive is to connect it to a smartphone via USB.

My method:

* smartphone with wireless charging resting on a wireless (Qi) charge pad (to ensure it didn't run out of power)
* long, USB printer cable running from the USB port on the phone to the printer-type USB-B socket on the back of the PM5

You may need a phone that has "USB On-The-Go (OTG)" compatibility to make this work.

Just get the right USB cable for your mobile phone charger and plug the PM5 into the mains supply.

Thank you - I was unaware that the PM5 could go direct to mains. I'll have a look at that.

It needs a phone charger wall-wart. 240V would kill it dead (and it may kill you and it may even burn your house down).

So before I blow it all up .......does it go phone charger to the USB slot on the PM5 (ie I'll need a usb to usb cable) ?

You need a USB-A to USB-B printer cable.

I have never been able to get this trick to work. The session just ends or the monitor powers off like normal. It seems to work for everyone else though.

Well never actually tried it on the PM5 or my PM4, however my setup has the monitor plugged into the USB port of a PC the whole time and when the PC is on and RowPro is opened, pretty sure the monitor never shuts down until the PC is shutdown

Admittedly the comm's going on could be keeping the monitor alive where as obviously the USB plug pack in the wall has no comm's just the 5V supply.

I am new to all this, but I have seen a YouTube video (Dark Horse Rowing, istr) relating to undefined intervals. It was a video aimed at crossfit training, where you wouldn't necessarily know how long you may need for 50 kettlebell swings in between two row sessions, say.
This would be of limited benefit if the 4 minute limit still applied, so maybe this could be your solution?
If you can't find it let me know and I'll search my history for a link.
