Agree with this. The erg is such a clinical tool that you really must do other stuff unless you want to drive yourself crazy.
The funny thing is I seem to be wired for monotony as I am still not bored, Only done 4.2m metres though so maybe it will come but it's all I do for exercise at present and I'm still enjoying it. Mind you, I've had the same sandwich for lunch for about 10 years and not bored of that either.

I like doing the same and/or similar things, over and over again, and I find this to be quite interesting. 😃

Lance, maybe you're been training too hard, and/or doing too many hard days, not taking enough time to take it easy and enjoy what you're doing.

Same happened to me until I discovered RowPro.

Playing music etc only worked for so long, cannot remember exactly but the motivation begins to dwindle when you hit your peak fitness level. Must have been at least a year, possibly two then my Model C was being used as a clothes drying rack and gathering dust before I looked at E-Row and discovered even though it was still there, nobody was using it and they had all migrated to RowPro.

This is about my 11th season using RowPro, would have quit the Erg years ago without it.

Maybe mix it up with some other sports over the summer, cycling etc. with a view come September time coming back refreshed. I really enjoyed your Canadian Indoor Rowing Champs video from Feb... Perhaps next year's CIRC could be your focus / challenge again come September?

I hit a slump at 1 year.

This seems weird, but I started doing 1 hour HR capped rows (60% HRR & 70% HRR) and kept trying to beat my best distances. I also bought a SkiErg. :D

Tuna, onion, pesto. You're making me hungry. Been on a seefood diet most of my adult life.

Hello gang:

Thanks to everyone for all the input and thoughts on this topic. I'm sure we all have been or will go through it at some point.

Lots of good takeaways here... but here are some of the key bits of feedback that are resonating with me at the moment...

Beyond the sniffles and marginal performance gains is boredom, for almost every one of us. You’re bored. Honeymoon—>marriage. Suggest trial separation. Come back with renewed commitment to maintaining the relationship and realistic expectations about long haul performance vectors.
This one sums up a lot of how I'm feeling... boredom with being on the erg after a particularly long & dreary winter here in Montreal. The other part is about realistic expectations is one I always have trouble with... Matching my past PB's seems like a reasonable goal at present, but shaving another 4 seconds of my 2K does not.

I'm feeling pretty "meuh" about erging too at the moment. Let's face it, it's not the world's most exciting activity. For the last few weeks, I've just been trying not to slide too far down the "distance rowed this season" ranking.
My daily meter average has stunk this season... but considering the slump I've been feeling... I now know that matching my output from the previous 2 seasons is not likely and I should now probably focus on quality instead of quantity.

Work on your 1min and 500m PBs. If my PBs are better and I'm significantly lighter than you, you should be able to eclipse them. Now....go train :D
A large amount of my training over the last 2 years has focused on base aerobic work and & weights. It makes sense to try these sprint distances with more gusto. I feel confident that with some focus, I should be able to break 350m for the 1 Min and land in the 1:28 range for the 500m

This is about my 11th season using RowPro, would have quit the Erg years ago without it.
I have considered this idea but would need to upgrade my monitor to do it. However, making a financial commitment on new equipment is usually a good motivator for me to continue.

Thanks Dino, I really enjoy making documentary videos and that event is a natural fit. Your comment about taking a break and coming back refreshed in Sept has a nice ring to it... I've been spending some time on the baseball diamond this season and that has been a nice change of pace.

My "go to" sandwich is a fried egg on buttered ciabatta bread with Swiss cheese, pesto and sriracha sauce.... way too heavy for every day eating but its a very tasty & filling treat after a marathon session on the erg or at the gym.

If your serious about your rowing its time to move on from the PM2 monitor. Don't get me wrong its still a great monitor that suits the occasional gym user but you need the connectivity to get Online rowing.
