New model
Re: New model
C2 doesn't announce ahead of time when they will be releasing a new model.
Just get a D or E, depending on what you like.
My C is still going strong, and others are still using their Bs.

Re: New model
Any new model will be more cosmetic than anything else.
The mechanical have not changed really from the Model C to the Model D. Small refinements and improvements but the overall mechanics have not really changed. Don't try and fix it if it ain't broken.
You can essentially turn your Model C into a Model D with a new handle, chain, quiet sprocket and shaft plus a few soft chain rollers and so then if you tried rowing "Blindfolded" you wouldn't tell them apart.
The electronics have changed out of sight, but what electronics hasn't over the last 20 years.

Re: New model
If you take that view you'll never buy one.
Just get a model D with PM5 and enjoy your rowing.
Most companies won't pre-announce any new version of existing equipment as they want to avoid the Osborne Effect which, largely, resulted in the complete failure of Osborne Computer Corporation in 1985.

Re: New model
The only time Concept 2 pre-announced a new model was with the introduction of its dynamic erg. C2 built a few prototypes of the dynamic and dragged them around the country for months. Purportedly this was to received public feedback. The real reason was to sabotage the launch of the beautiful new Oartec Slider, which was receiving enthusiastic reviews and was competitively priced. It was the only real market threat Concept 2 had experienced in its history. Peter Dreissigacker, in the video, "Peter Dreissigacker, Speaking from Experience" ( https://youtu.be/sFkfcxZS58w ) readily admits that the purpose of the C2 dynamic prototype roadshow was to hurt sales of the Oartec Slider (43:00 - 49:00) and reports with evident satisfaction (1:14 - 1:20) that people were saying, "I was thinking of getting the Australian one (the Slider), but now I think I'll wait."

Why is it that whenever you post here, Sidewinder, the only thing you really ever have to contribute is digs @ Concept 2 company.
Why are you even a member here? Is that the only reason? to get some reactions from your cheap shots.

Re: New model
Buying the handle, chain, sprocket, etc., while not being prohibitively expensive, will still require the knowledge and talent to install them. Since most people do not have anywhere close to the technical ability of Carl Watts, that means more expense in hiring an expert to do it. Once that is done, you will still have a machine that is louder than the Model D and E with a locking mechanism that is inferior to those of the newer models. That can't be upgraded. And to bring everything even more up to date, you will have to purchase a PM 5.Carl Watts wrote: ↑July 10th, 2019, 10:07 pm

Taking into account the expense that all this entails, I believe that for the average person who at best has limited technical ability, getting a new Model D or E would be a much better idea. And if you are selling a Model C in reasonably good condition, the amount you get for it will considerably reduce the price you will have to pay for a newer, quieter, and I what I believe is a better erg.

Re: New model
Nobody in this thread has proposed getting a model C.
In order to describe how little change you should expect in a successor to the model D, Carl Watts described how little has changed between the model C and D - implicitly suggesting that this will also be the case at the next upgrade, whenever that happens.
Re: New model
Where did you ever get the idea that anyone proposed getting a model C? I just stated that it seemed rather ridiculous to spend a lot of money for parts and labor to upgrade someone's current model C when they could instead sell theirs and get a Model D or E instead.

Re: New model
Concept 2's utopian vision of the future is to have everyone, stretching to the horizon, sitting on a static Model D. In that glorious world, no dynamic rowing ergometers will exist - not even its own. Concept 2 never did want to manufacture a dynamic erg. To realize that desirable future, C2 continues to advise prospective purchasers that the Model D rather than the Dynamic is a better choice. This advice is not in accord with the known merits of the dynamically balanced action, but let it not be suggested that this advice is motivated by C2 self-interest. The principals of Concept 2 have either retired or are at the age of retirement, but let it also never be whispered that Concept 2 has run out of ideas. Heck, they painted the Model D black didn't they? How can anyone think that Concept 2 has ceased to be innovative?
