Virtual Racing

Post by KeithT » October 12th, 2020, 2:29 pm

I did a competition this past weekend and I thought you all would appreciate the way in which it was done. I have done "virtual" comps before but usually it is just where you do your piece and send a pic of the screen and/or verify it. This one (US Rowing Race Against the Clock) was pretty cool in that competitors signed in (thru Regatta Central) with a unique code and were on screen. There was a live link where people could watch (on YouTube) and they had announcers for each race. At the end you read your score and showed your monitor to the announcers. So, all outcomes completely legit. If we have to do WRIC or other comps like this due to COVID I think it's a great alternative and allows for more participation. Now the live link might be hard to do if dozens in each race but I am sure that could be figured out.

Thanks for sharing. I took a look at the recording on YouTube ( https://youtu.be/XtPM_99JEDg ). This seems a pragmatic approach to create a near-real-life-experience. Works quite well with the 5 minute racing format.
I run in the mud, I sweat on the erg, and I happily battle the years...

The AIRC has a virtual element this year too - entries open for another week and there have been some international entries I understand

Just signed up for the Virtual Head of the Charles, on the water version. They have an erg division, too. I'm too out of shape for a max 4702 piece on the erg, but in my boat with a downstream current, I should be OK. The link is under a thread just below, but here it is again if anyone wants to race on the (virtual) Charles River! https://www.hocr.org/

There is a map that shows all the courses people have rowed all over the world. Pretty cool. Here that is: https://rowingtracker.com/hocr/2020.

I plan on doing it this Thursday, stay tuned.

I have just heard about the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships that has also gone virtual, on 21st November.

I think I'll sign up for it, but the AIRC will be too badly timed for me to consider.

Completed the virtual but actually on the water Head of the Charles. Race report under the "On the Water" thread.

If I hadn't picked up this knee issue I might have considered it. Bit of fear of failure too 😕

There's also BRIC, which has gone virtual too. We are never going to win, but we won't fail either.

Fair comment about your knee, but as it's virtual I'm sure there will be a lot of people entering who wouldn't otherwise.
