Lung and diaphragm pain

Hello!

I know that my question may belong into the hypochondriac category, but I just wanna make sure. ;)
After racing in the German indoor champs this Sunday (1000m), overpaced and with a disappointing 3.35 I have had lung pain and a lactic acid overdose like never before. It was an uncomfortable race and due to a technical failure we had to wait 30 mins between warming up and racing.

My lungs felt almost inflamed and I coughed for 6 hours before going to bed (race was at 18.00). Next day the cough was gone but I have a sore throat since then. I am quite sure it's not asthma as....well, I don't have it and only had the feeling twice - after the Austrian indoor champs and now. (No problem in 5ks, intervals, not even 2ks) My diaphragm is sore, the muscles between the ribs as well and my mouth - everything involved in breathing.

Do you experience this? Is it possible to make lung tissue and the trachea inflammated/sore through racing? Can this really last for a few days? (Oh yeah, and I did the race at home, so in a dry, heated room with an open window). Additional info: Apparently I asked two doctors first thing (one of them a rower) and they say nothing dangerous can happen.

Hello, i would get this checked out as you may have a pleural tear. This can happen with exertion, my friend had this from a gentle jog. Understand it is super painful.

Can relate to this, I guess you raced in cold conditions also. I have raced often and most of the time my lungs/throat took a hard hit. For some strange reason the air always feels very dry, and most people dig in just that bit extra during a race. Resulting in being very out of breath and breathing in lots of cold/dry air.
I heard this “problem” often. During speedskating this is called a (1500m cough), different sport same effect.
Also keep in mind, a 500 and 1k on the rower are the most anaerobe. With the highest lactic build up.

I haven't had it in dry conditions but the 'erg cough' is very well known. The lining of your lungs can get inflamed when you row at a true max effort. I don't think it's anything to worry about, but I'm not a doctor and this isn't medical advice, so see how you feel tomorrow and then it will hopefully have improved more, as it sounds like it already has improved

I have had exercise induced asthma due to fierce air conditioning in a gym. That was a one off, but only happened due to the length of time I was rowing and not the effort. Some of the effects lasted a couple of days.

This is to be expected with an all out, maximum effort. If your symptoms have not reduced at all after a week, seek medical advice.
