Large Group Interval Workouts fall out of sync?

Post by FrankCMI » January 4th, 2023, 5:12 pm

I'm having trouble with a newer machine/PM5 that won't keep up with the work time/rest time intervals of the other machines. The machines aren't linked together, just a situation where everyone starts at the same time, and one ends the workout behind. I have seen ergs get behind by a couple seconds over multiple intervals, but this one seems to be more significant, like up to five seconds total over 10 intervals. Is this common? Is there a known cause or fix? I had always assumed there was a little 'grace period' if I rower didn't start the work time piece right away, but that is true, it is not case here, after some testing.

I believe there is a second or so grace period after the rest interval hits zero where if you start, your next interval starts. After that grace period is up, the timer starts whether you do or not.
I could easily imagine seeing a 5 second variance in a group setting over 10 intervals.

I agree with Cdub's response - but when I got on this erg myself, and made sure to be pulling before the work time started, I continued to have the same issue. I'm curious to know if anyone else has experienced this.

With a PM5 or PM5 you can link up to eight monitors together wirelessly.

I've looked quite closely at the PM5's startup behaviour, as with Open Rowing Monitor we want to compare our results with the PM5, and this gets in the way. According the bluetooth specification, the PM5 actually waits with starting the row until the flywheel reaches a minimum speed. I have the impression that this is only part of the story: it seems that on a RowErg, the PM5 waits until there is a certain amplitude in the sinoid it receives from the sensor (which, indirectly is an indication of the flywheel speed as well). Typically, ORM's row starts 0.5 to 1 seconds earlier than the PM5's, based on the exact same datafeed. No changes in our settings resolve this. But different rowers have different experiences.

Long story short, when rowers start more agressive, the PM5 timer kicks in early, when you have a slow start, it kicks in later.
