Polar Transmitter/Garmin Strap Field Results.
Executive Summary: Polar H9 + Garmin Dual belt + KY Jelly worked flawlessly on 10k run (ANT+ Garmin watch receiver), 1 minute treadmill (5khz Gymlink), 1 minute elliptical (5khz Gymlink), 1 minute row (PM3/Gymlink), 1 minute row (PM5/Ant+), 1 minute BikeErg (PM5/Bluetooth). See pics below.
Background: I've owned more than a dozen chest HRMS over 40 years, mostly Polar. I never had a problem with straps until I bought the H9. In fact I still have a drawer full of T31 and T34 Polars that still work (albeit with weak batteries), but speak only Gymlink, so are useless with modern receivers.
I decided the H9 was garbage and bought a Coospo and later a Garmin, both of which work fine. Thanks to this thread and others, I looked more closely at the strap and found that, low and behold, it had essentially zero connectivity on one side. I also discovered that the Polar and Garmin straps were interchangeable. So I tried this experiment and it worked!
I'm not sure the KY jelly is essentially, but I think in my case it prevents noise from jostling while running.
Conclusion: I'll never use a Polar strap again. If need be, I'll buy a cheap strap fro Ali Baba. I'm not sure why they are so weak, but all the correspondence convinces me that mine is not just a fluke. In the past, I used Polars for years and years, never washing them or anything.
P.S. I even replaced the battery in my first Polar, which was sealed. There was no interweb information or sales, and HRMs were relatively rare, so I sent at it with a scalpel and discovered a 2032 with pigtails soldered on. So I put in a new 2032, soldered in the connections, and use plastic cement to put a clear patch over the incision. Worked for several more years.
P.P.S. When I did the field test, my Garmin watch was considerate enough to tell me the battery on my H9 was low. So I replaced it with (sorry, Carl) another 2025 before my run.
