Bummer to hear about the health issues within this group... @Sascha, hope your recovery is still going well. @Alex, no hernia is good news, although not knowing definitively what is ailing you can be just as frustrating (as I can relate).

Still in a bit of a lull motivation-wise going back to early May, but rather than beat myself up about it I recognize it as being a normal part of the cycle of ups and downs over the course of a season. In hindsight, I wonder if the death of our dog in early May also had something to do with just generally feeling a bit lethargic last month. So now, I'm making sure to, at the very least, stay in maintenance mode. I will need to submit monthly 5k TT scores from Jul-Sep as I shoot to make a masters crew for the Head of the Charles, so will soon shift my training focus towards the necessary preparations to nail a fast time.

A staple 20k Z2 row yesterday that felt bad at the start but much better once I was 4-5k into it.

Very sorry to hear about the family pet. It's a hard thing to deal with; I don't think anyone understands until they go through it. We went through it about six years ago with our older lab and just again this morning with our younger lab, albeit he made it to 14 this year. No matter how much we know and understand that they don't live near as long as humans in most cases, it's never easy, and similar to you, helping the kids navigate it at a young age is an additional layer.

You did REALLY push the limits not that long ago with some huge PBs, so you were, at least ime, inevitably going to have a dip, but that dip will have become a lot deeper with the death of your dog.

Now you've identified and have something to work towards you'll be back on the upswing in no time at all. I'm using BRIC as my motivation

Thank you very much. In retrospect, all the signs were there that he was on the downswing but I don't think you'll ever be fully prepared for the actual day. The one thing I am trying to do with my wife and kids is remind them of some of the good times and memories because those will never leave us.

Woke up to our older dog in pretty rough shape, reminiscent of when his mother who we had for a long time had a stroke and ultimately didn't make it.
Very sorry to read this. It's never easy and as you say, really try focus on the happy memories.

That's good that it's not a hernia, but bad that you dont know what it actually is.
Just one of those things with the human body isn't it, just when you are quite adamant it's one thing, it will throw a curveball at you.

Well, that was a massively humbling experience. First time on the BikeErg, and I stupidly thought it can't be that hard. The sweat was dripping off me after eight minutes, and I wanted to stop after 15 minutes, and it was frustrating that I couldn't get it sub 38 despite a too late surge in effort. I was surprised with how different the stress and strain felt, but it shouldn't have been as it is a different movement to rowing.

I didn’t really enjoy it, but that makes me think I should be trying to add it into my training for that very reason. Chapeau to John & Flatbread for doing this at least twice the wattage for sustained periods of time.

Another workout in the books and it felt quite decent.
4x10min, 3:30r on the kierg, as this seems to be better with less compression. This was after a ~16h fast, unusual for me, but worked well. As food gives me some pressure on the gut, it seemed to be a good approach to go for it before eating.

Many people have diverticular disease and don't know about it. I had mine pointed out many times during colonoscopy. I was always told it's wear and tear and mainly lower down on the decending colon, so lower left of abdomen. I've never had a severe flare up just an achey sort of feeling and a bit bloated. I often think higher intensity sessions on the erg can have an effect too but may be wrong.
Dehydration definitely makes it worse and ergs can increase this where blood supply to gut is restricted to allow it to service muscles / skin / liver. While biome may well effect the material in the gut and therefore how easily it is moved, despite the many newer theories on biome I am not aware of any that should effect the tone of the lower bowel muscle that is the essence of diverticula disease.

Agreed, trauma is an unpredictable thing. The unshakeable good times is what keeps us grounded, it does emotionally help! Better to confront it like this than avoid it!

Good luck with your projects and rowing! If anything, sometimes you can bounce back, look back and see how you overcame unexpected difficulties!

5/3/1 Wendler. Cycle 2, had to rush to gym to avoid closing. Slight progression. 40kg * 11 bench, 80kg * 11 squat, 1 more in the AMRAP. Considering my nutrition was meh due to work issues, progress is progress.

I think Dangerspouse will be like this too, and I might surprise myself as well. I wonder if the fact that dogs are totally reliant on us, give love unconditionally, and don't intend to annoy us, make them that much more precious.

Starting to see a little bit of aerobic fitness come back.

Tried to hold r22, but had to pick up the rate last 10. Hip swing and weight shift are starting to come back. Need to get 1:59 down to rate 20 over the next few months.
