outside use?

Post by therealdougie » October 11th, 2007, 3:39 pm

I'm awaiting a B bought on ebay. The problem is wife wife doesn't want it in the house (not really sure why). She's OK with the garage, which is OK with me. Thinking I can open the garage door and have an early morning workout. How about out on the back patio (no roof)? If I throw a tarp over it, will it be sufficiently covered and maintained? Does temperature affect the machine? I live in St. Louis.

I always row in the garage and prefer this as it's cooler, compared to having the erg in the house.

Also, the temperature range is more moderate than outside.

The main challenge with keeping the erg outside would be rain and humidity, and a tarp would not protect the erg from those things. Best would be to keep the erg inside where it is protected from rain and changes in humidity.

hate to see the tarp blow off in a wind storm and wreck your PM2... keep it in the garage :-)

About four years ago I was doing a 6000m time trial on a model C erg outside the rowing club. At the 3000m mark the heavens opened up and it started to pour with rain. Both myself and the erg got completely saturated in the heavy downpour. That same erg and monitor are still working today as if nothing had happenned.

Caution: Static C2 ergs can ruin your technique and timing for rowing in a boat.
The best thing I ever did to improve my rowing was to sell my C2 and get a Rowperfect.

The Cs and Ds seem to hold up very well, but I have seen some very rusty Bs, even ones that had been used indoors all the time. Near the coastline the salt air makes the problem worse.

There's quite a few folks in the UK (which is that large mostly wet place next to Ireland (which is even wetter)).

Pete Marston does - he uses a canvas gazebo for cover.
Nick Rockliff does - he just drags his ergo outside. He's even been known to row during a rain shower.

If I had my own machine I'd be out on the patio on any dry day, I've been using my bike on the turbo outside this week.

The best one I've seen was Andreas from South Africa with his ergo on his balcony and the most stunning view. (I think that may have been on the old forum.)

For $70 with shipping...you can buy a cover from C2:
https://www2.concept2.com/VIA/index.jsp
(listed under "accessories")

Guessing it will still take some abuse from the humidity, etc...and the cover is only listed as "water resistant" for protection from dust, etc so it should probably be used in combination with a fully waterproof tarp...but if you're set on leaving it out there...the custom-fit cover would probably add a solid level of additional protection IMHO.

I've been using my Model D on the back deck of our house here in Melbourne for the last year under a covered area. I also have the C2 cover which works great. No issues whatsoever.

Nice thing here in Melbourne is that it's not too humid or cold, and with the drought - not any rain either. (if that can be considered a good thing  )

Cheers
